The final 2009 Inauguration celebration: a ball for the Obama for America staff, featuring entertainment by Arcade Fire and Jay-Z, and appearances by actor Kal Penn, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe, Vice President Joe Biden and Jill Biden and President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

"Just for tonight, revel in what you did," said Plouffe, looking out over a crowd of thousands of staff and their companions. "You elected the President of the United States of America. You changed the course of history." Plouffe said that for him all the hard work had led up to the moment when he could say, "President Barack Obama," whereupon the president and first lady walked onstage.

Obama Assumes Presidency

Welcomed by millions in Washington and billions around the world, Barack H. Obama addressed the country for the first time as its president.
For those who wanted to be there in person, the day started early and the wait in the lines was long but all of our neighbors agreed that it was well worth it. Poignant moments were the oath itself, Obama's speech and Bush's departure by helicopter.

His inaugural address can be read here:

Announcing Organizing For America: Campaign volunteers to organize for change in their communities

A press release from Obama spokesperson Ben LeBolt: WASHINGTON, DC -- In a video announcement sent to supporters today, President-elect Obama announced the formation of Organizing for America. This is the next phase for the organization that was built during the campaign, offering volunteers the continued opportunity to work for change in their communities by organizing in support of reform in Washington.

“As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead. That’s why I’m asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities. Since the election hundreds of thousands of you have shared your ideas about how this movement should move forward, and we’ve listened carefully,” said President-elect Obama in the video announcement.

He continued: “Volunteers, grass roots leaders and ordinary citizens will continue to drive our organization, helping us bring about the changes we proposed during the campaign: a solution to our economic crisis, an end to the war in Iraq, affordable healthcare for all and new sources of energy to power our economy and protect our environment.”
