Stand Up for Equal Rights - No on Prop 8!

The No on 8 campaign is gearing up for one of the most closely contested - and most important - races on this November's ballot. Prop 8 is the measure that would change California's constitution to ban same sex marriages, even though the California Supreme Court found that same sex couples had a right to marry. Prop 8 would rescind that right and for the first time, enshrine discrimination into our constitution.

Recent polls suggest that Californians support same sex marriage rights and plan to vote No on Prop 8. The Field Poll recently reported that 51% of voters oppose Prop 8 and 42% support it. That's good news, especially because ballot propositions that are under 50% support this early rarely ever pass.

But defenders of equal rights aren't resting. Instead they're continuing to organize to defeat Prop 8, especially since the far right is energized to pass it. Last weekend the theocratic right announced their organizing plan, including a massive rally in San Diego on November 1 and a broadcast to churches to take place on October 1 - potentially in violation of federal tax laws that prevent churches from engaging in political advocacy.

Prop 8 backers have a multimillion dollar warchest, which opponents of Prop 8 - those who support equal marriage rights - will have a difficult time matching. That's why public advocacy for equality and against hate is so important. Already Californians have shifted in favor of equal marriage rights as same sex couples get married around the state, including here in Monterey County.

The No on 8 cause was given a boost when Attorney General Jerry Brown unveiled the neutral and factually accurate ballot language for Prop 8, which explains in bold type that the proposition would "eliminate the right of same sex couples to marry". Prop 8 backers wanted the less honest "limit on marriage" language, but as Jerry Brown explained, "they can't say with a straight face that this isn't about eliminating the right to gay marriage" so now they are suing.

Brown's move is helpful, but if we are to defeat Prop 8, we have to take action. The California Democratic Party, and the Monterey County Democrats, have endorsed a NO vote on Prop 8. Your no vote is essential, but just as important is your activism. Equality for All is the coordinating committee fighting to defeat Prop 8.
