Come to the "First Presidential Primary in the Nation" Dec 9

All the excitement, drama and spectacle of a presidential primary are coming to Sherwood Hall in Salinas Sunday, Dec. 9. That's when local Democrats will stage the "First Presidential Primary in the Nation", a convention-style straw poll for all the Democratic presidential campaigns, to be held at Sherwood Hall.

Special guests include Congressman Sam Farr, Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue, Christine Pelosi, and Bill Bates. Christine Pelosi is the chair of the California Democratic Party platform committee, author of the upcoming book Campaign Boot Camp, and the daughter of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Cartoonist Bill Bates, a California Newspaper Publishers award winner and two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, is the author of the recently released collection Bates on Bush.

VIP Reception!

You can come to a VIP Reception with Congressman Sam Farr, Christine Pelosi, Bill Bates and other notables, starting at 11:30 am at the FPPN Dec 9. You'll also be able to get signed copies of Christine and Bill's new books! Click for VictoryShares and admission to the reception.

Organizers expect the event to be the largest ever gathering of Democratic activists in Central California.

All of the national campaigns will be given the opportunity to present the case for why their candidate should be selected as the Democratic Party nominee. Assemblymember Anna Caballero is scheduled to speak on behalf of Hillary Clinton. Chairperson of the California Board of Equalization Betty Yee will speak for John Edwards.

Event MC's will be the Vice Chairs of the California Democratic Party, Alexandra Rooker and Alicia Wang.

More attendees to be confirmed.

All of the action and excitement of a convention floor will be encouraged, including floor demonstrations and marches.

After the campaigns' speeches and electronic presentations, voting will be conducted at ballot boxes located around the auditorium floor. Students will be encouraged to take part. The results will be announced at the end of the day.

Although straw polls have no official bearing on elections, their influence is often considerable, and the various presidential campaigns are showing strong interest in this one. Campaigns will compete to marshall the largest number of supporters in order to boost the prospects of their candidate in the February 5 California primary.
