Celebrating Our Incredible Volunteers

Salinas Valley Democratic Club volunteer party
Recently we celebrated the greatest volunteer-driven campaign in Monterey County history with parties on the Peninsula at the Ol' Factory Cafe and the Hilton Garden Inn, and in Salinas at the Pizza Factory. In Salinas, Shawn "Bigger! Better!" Bagley came up with the idea of staging a tableau representing the whole campaign - and here's the resulting photo, with a great guide to what it all means supplied by Marjetka Bagley:

"On the left you have a reenactment of our visibility rallies - the young woman above Shawn's fist along with her mother behind her on the left were typical of people who came in to buy Obama gear and stayed for the rest of the campaign - they were great. The woman holding the handmade 'pueblo' sign is Olga Reyna, our SUPER DOOPER queen of all volunteers. To the right of Olga is Jyl Lutes (who ran for City Council and won) standing in front of our 'representative door' in cardboard with our door hangers on it, showing our GOTV effort. Tucked in the back there by the "door" is Patty Saenz who coordinated our candidate campaigns.

Help Obama Win A Filibuster-Proof Majority

obama martin youtubeWe know that you have missed those happy days phone banking at our Headquarters on Bonifacio Plaza.  That is why we are reopening the phone bank starting tomorrow, Sunday.

We are running phone banks on behalf of Democrat Jim Martin, (D) Georgia in his December 2nd run-off against Republican Saxby Chambliss.  If Martin wins, he will bring us within one vote of a filibuster proof majority.

Our goal is to call 5,000 Georgians in 7 days.

Can we do that?  You fill in the answer:  ____ we can!

Find out more about Jim Martin and about who else is campaigning for Jim Martin on his campaign website

John McCain is campaigning for Chambliss, and the RNC is plastering the airwaves with Rovian negative ads.  Martin clearly needs our help.

Run-off elections usually have a low turn-out, so motivating Democrats is critical in winning this seat and just a few hundred more calls can make a big difference.

Why don't you sign up for one of the following phone banks:

We are calling Georgia, which is 3 hours ahead of us, thus the earlier phone banking shifts.

Volunteered for Obama? You won the election

Take it from the inner circle of the Obama campaign, as recorded late on Election Night by CBS' "60 Minutes" (emphasis mine):

Asked how they won states like North Carolina and Indiana, [campaign manager David] Plouffe told Kroft, "Well, first of all, we believed we could. I mean, I think part of it is not being afraid to venture out and try [to] win in what has been considered hostile territory. But we also had these volunteers. And without them, the idea of winning North Carolina and Indiana would be a bridge too far. And our campaign was the art of the possible because of these millions of people out there. You know, if we decided we wanted to go register 500,000 people in a state, we could because of them."

That is exactly what they did in North Carolina, where race did matter when it came to registering huge numbers of minority voters. Plouffe called it growing the electorate, and it changed the political map. In Indiana, the number of Obama field offices, staffed mostly by volunteers, outnumbered the McCain campaign 44 to none.

They used Internet sites like Facebook and Twitter to engage young voters. They canvassed neighborhoods street by street, identifying supporters and entering the information into a central database. It helped them determine who had voted early and who might need a ride to the polls on Election Day.

Barack Obama - We Have A Lot of Work To Do

Lacrosse and Proposition 8 (down with lacrosse)

All right, I get it--a lot of people out there aren't into gay marriage. I don't agree with it, but I get it. What I don't understand is why this is an issue.

If you don't like gay marriage, the solution is easy: DON'T GET GAY MARRIED.

Proposition 8 is unnecessary. If you don't like homosexuality, don't date people whose gender matches yours. Raise your kids to do the same. DON'T take away the rights of a group that's not like you. I don't watch Lacrosse. I've never watched it. I've never played it. It makes me uncomfortable*. But I'm not going to amend the state's constitution to make it illegal.

The Mercury News reported today that Yes on 8 is coming out ahead in early voting. This needs to be stopped. Talk to your friends. Talk to your parents. Talk to whoever. Let them know it's OK to disagree with a lifestyle, but it's wrong to take away people's rights. We've got so many other things to be excited about on election day (I hope you're all as excited as I am); lets not let Prop 8 sour the evening for us.

*Lacrosse doesn't really make me uncomfortable
